10 Points to Help Minimize Loss of Vision from Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Some tips to minimize your risk from age-related macular degeneration thanks to the MD Foundation:

1. Don’t smoke. Eat less, exercise more and wear sunglasses
2. Avoid vegetable oils (VIP no processed baked foods, sauces or margerine. Check your bread is not made with vegetable oil).
3. Only use cold pressed rice bran oil for all cooking, olive oil and other nut oils are for salads etc.
4. Eat fish 3 times a week (do not fry it as it destroys the benefit)
5. Eat a handful of nuts or more each week.
6. Eat lutein rich foods e.g. spinach, green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, broccoli etc, corn and eggs
7. Don’t eat too many carrots or apriocots as they contain too much beta-carotene.
8. Eat chicken rather than red meat.
9. Use olive oil but not olive oil margerine
10. Eat low glycaemic index foods e.g. whole grain bread
