Just in case you are not aware, we thought we should remind you that health fund rebates expire December 31! This means that your optical cover will start again from the 1st January 2012 from the maximum claim amount you are entitled to. Unfortunately health fund rebates aren’t accumulative from year to year.

Some tips to minimize your risk from age-related macular degeneration thanks to the MD Foundation:

1. Don’t smoke. Eat less, exercise more and wear sunglasses
2. Avoid vegetable oils (VIP no processed baked foods, sauces or margerine. Check your bread is not made with vegetable oil).
3. Only use cold pressed rice bran oil for all cooking, olive oil and other nut oils are for salads etc.
4. Eat fish 3 times a week (do not fry it as it destroys the benefit)
5. Eat a handful of nuts or more each week.
6. Eat lutein rich foods e.g. spinach, green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, broccoli etc, corn and eggs
7. Don’t eat too many carrots or apriocots as they contain too much beta-carotene.
8. Eat chicken rather than red meat.
9. Use olive oil but not olive oil margerine
10. Eat low glycaemic index foods e.g. whole grain bread

Our Ultimo branch has been servicing the area with the best optical care for many years. These years have built us a warm and friendly customer base, mostly consisting of people who either study or work in the area. Why do you need to take care of your eyes? As a student or teacher, impairment of your vision could be highly detrimental to your learning or teaching capabilities. Sitting in a lecture theatre, the projection screen may be blurred, hindering your ability to follow the presentation. Alternatively, as a teacher, marking papers may be tedious and tiresome for your eyes, as the lines skewed and font are a lighter shade of black or blue.
